7 weeks earlier, this is the same waterhole -
Seven weeks ago I saw dozens of tiny (1cm) brown frogs moving around the perimeter of Arches Pond (above), but these dying tadpoles obviously belong to a different frog species as the largest were about 5cm long.
Although my heart was pleading for me to help in some way, my head was saying "leave nature be", and I walked away as the ants worked on the dead and dying.
Meat ants take advantage of death
Another waterhole we visited last month was still supporting life yesterday, although it had halved in size. Fish swirled in the water that was only about 10cm deep, their fins and tails spashing the surface. Without rain, they will find life an increasing struggle.
I am unaware if these fish are native or introduced, but there will be no escape if rain doesn't soon replenish the waterhole
It seems birds will drink from any wet patch of earth holding water. Birds, large and small utilised tiny puddles, but no bath was on the agenda. Again, I found it interesting to observe the survival habits of our feathered wildlife.
I have not been able to identify these two birds, but they made use of what would probably amount to half a cup of water. [edit - birds identified by a fellow nature enthusiast as Striped Honeyeaters - thank you Lola]
Likewise, a Grey Butcherbird drinks from a paltry puddle
Spending time in the bush in the cool, calm, early morning air was refreshing. The whispy white clouds and rolling pink "waves" of sunset, along with the space and nature of the forest, provided the perfect setting for quality time together. These weekends away, or day trips, enjoying the "simple things" in life are a major part of my life and provide me with wonderful times and lasting memories.

Dear Gaye
I have been reading your posts & think you are so wonderfully able to convey your thoughts, ideas, feelings & daily life in the written word. I am in awe!!
You mention the "simple things" and that you had been looking into Buddhist teachings. I was wondering if you had ever come across a couple of books by Eckhart Tolle - "The Power of Now" & "A New Earth". I had been searching all my life to find "Who I am" and found these 2 books resonated so completely for me.
Also Oprah has recommended people read "A New Earth" as part of her book club and then participate in 10 weekly FREE online "classes" led by Eckhart. The classes start next Monday & Eckhart will be available for live interaction, answering questions submitted to her site.
So far 360,000 people world-wide have signed up, and more are expected before next week. If you are interested, checkout "Get Ready to be Awakened" on
http://www2.oprah.com/index.jhtml
On one of Eckhart's discussion groups, someone has posted "I can only imagine how this might effect life on our little planet Earth, but it could be really, really, really good news."
Yours in peace & love, in the NOW,
hello Bev,
I'm pleased you found my site. Thank you so much for your kind words regarding my writing.
A couple of years ago I bought and read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle, and I found it extremely insightful. I underlined lines and sections that really hit me, and gave it to my daughter to read. I now have the book back, and will get it out and read it again. I will also look for "A New Earth".
The book really helped me to forgive people who had wronged me, as well as to forgive myself for letting myself down. It also helped me to put the past in the past where it belongs, and to focus less on the future and concentrate on getting the most out of life right now in the present.
I had previously tried to forgive others, but was only fooling myself. But now I have genuinely forgiven, and it is such a life-giving thing - such a weight lifted.
Thank you so much, Bev, for taking the time to leave your comment. I appreciate this.
Kind regards
Gaye
Your eye is so in tune with your self. This post is a good example of this. You see things holistically. You see the relationships around you. Yet your style is so laconic. Simple without being simplistic.
On a totally different note: I am astounded that Arches Pond has dried up so much in the last 7 weeks. We have had nothing but soaking rains since Christmas - with most of it running down gutters, into pipes and out to sea. Although our catchment dams are close to 65% full. And where are you - Lower Hunter somewhere?
hi Julie,
I look forward to your comments. You use words so well. I am learning about words as I go, and there is hardly a day that I don't look up words in the dictionary that I see used, mostly on the internet. I check their meaning or how they are used, or different ways to use them.
Unfortunately my memory doesn't retain all of this, but I enjoy the education.
I live at Singleton in the Hunter Valley, and we have had excellent summer rain. I have a green lawn which is a rarity in summer. I usually go two months without mowing, but have had to mow twice a week all summer.
The Pilliga forests (the destination of my waterhole post) is between Coonabarabran and Narrabri in northwestern NSW. I asked a local about rainfall and was told that the nearest town (Baradine) had not had rain for four weeks. Prior to that, the area flooded just before Christmas.
Oh, and by the way, the name "Arches Pond" is my naming just for the convenience of referring to the waterholes. I'm a little bit crazy, and named unnamed landmarks that we visited over our three trips to the forest :)
We will be returning in the spring, and it will be very interesting to visit these waterholes again.
And, yes, I do look at the whole picture, because that is reality, as I see it.
Thank you for your interest in my journal entries, and for taking the time to comment.
Cheers
Gaye
I am working on a yarn from my father about Coonabarrabran.
Have you ever been to the Macquarie Marshes? I have long thought to make that journey - will do it once I ease up on the working days which is coming up later in 2008.
Have you lived in Singleton all your life? I went to High School in Muswellbrook.
hi Julie,
no, I have never been to the Macquarie Marshes area, and although I have heard of it, I don't know anything about it.
And, yes, I too went to Muswellbrook High. Please feel free to contact me via my email address on the right-hand side of my blog page if you wish.
Regards
Gaye
